Excerpt: Chapter One

"You fell down the stairs. Do you understand?"
She was barely coherent, but shook her head in agreement.
"You were coming down the stairs, tripped, and landed on the floor. You screamed for me and I came in from the patio. After I found you on the floor, I yelled for the chauffeur."

Jennifer continued to nod, but Bill saw that she was again fading into a semiconscious state. He began lightly shaking her. "Jennifer, honey, stay with me, darling. Hurry; get us to the hospital!" he demanded of the chauffeur. Bill's performance was as convincing as always. The chauffeur sped up and Bill continued, "Sweetheart, you're gonna be fine. Hang in there, baby."

As they pulled up to the hospital entrance, Bill returned to a whisper. "If you blow this, I'll kill you. Say exactly what I said and nothing else," he warned. His threats became nothing more than garbled slurs as she completely drifted from consciousness


Excerpt: Chapter Eight

It was Monday morning and Jennifer wondered where the weekend had gone. She felt melancholy knowing that her Baja retreat had passed so quickly and was but a memory. Still humming Besame Mucho, her favorite south of the border song, she found it exceedingly difficult to concentrate on her salon this morning. Images of times gone by with Gordon kept forcing their way between her and the stack of invoices lying on her desk. It seemed like just yesterday when thoughts of him haunted her most every day, but time would heal, or so they said. She was grateful for a reprieve, whenever it would come, but somehow as if he had a telepathic connection to her heart, Gordon always knew the precise moment to call. Just when she was on the verge of getting over him, she would pick up her cell phone to hear his seductive voice ?

"You don't write, you don't call, and you don't even return emergency messages on your pager." He nervously waited what seemed like an eternity for her response.

"Oh shit, I knew I shouldn't have picked up," she reprimanded herself. She knew who it was in an instant, the instant that her heart stopped beating. How did he always have that effect on me? She could feel her cheeks flush as she struggled to speak.

"Oh, it's you? I"... she cleared her throat and continued, "I had every intention of returning your call once I got settled. I took a weekend trip to the Baja and got in late last night, but you were on my list." How could she tell him that she had no intention of returning his call? Hearing his voice only weakened her and destroyed all the effort she had invested in getting over the latest heartbreak he'd inflicted.

"Look, I'm sorry I've stayed away so long. You know how it is." Gordon tried to apologize.

"Yeah; so what's up?" It took every ounce of courage for her to pull it off - the nonchalant facade she desperately needed to convey. She couldn't reveal that after all this time, she was still hopelessly crazy about him and the mere sound of his voice sent her reeling...
